Be In the Know

2020-12-16T16:10:18-05:00April 24th, 2020|

As parents, our number one job is to keep our children safe. Sometimes that is easier said than done. We live in an ever changing world with so many unforeseen factors. How can we prepare ourselves and our children for everything?

One great way is to talk to our kids. Praesidium, an organization dedicated to helping identify how molesters operate in organizations and how sexual activity occurs between children in programs, has published an article on how parent’s can better prepare themselves and their children to identify sexual abuse.

Mindfulness-Gratitude

2020-12-16T16:26:37-05:00April 6th, 2020|

Moments of gratitude. To build in time daily for positive recognition, decorate a jar or box and invite all members of the household to write down moments they are grateful for throughout the day. At scheduled or random intervals, choose one or more to read out loud. What are you grateful for today?

COPING WITH QUARANTINE

Take a break from the news. Constantly watching, listening to or reading news stories and social media may exacerbate you or your family members’ stress and anxiety. Be sure to disconnect from time to time.

Helpful Tips for Quarantine

2020-12-16T16:33:52-05:00March 19th, 2020|

The Y causes: We’re for youth development, healthy living and social responsibility. The closure of our building does not stop us from working on our causes! With that spirit of community and commitment to the physical, mental, and educational well-being of all our children and families, we would like to share some helpful hints and resources that may assist you with your time at home with your children. You may not be able to go to swim lessons, play in the tumble room, or come to reading class, but you can do lots of other things together! Many of these can be used with children across age groups, so don’t limit their use with your pre-school children.

Some Helpful Hints:

Set and keep a routine. If your child is used to going to childcare, they are used to a certain amount of structure. I am attaching a sample schedule under the resources. You don’t have to be extremely scheduled, just set a routine and keep to it.

Get dressed every day. Occasional PJ days are fun, but everyday PJ’s can make it harder for kids to go back to school or childcare.

Answer your child’s questions about the virus in very simple and non-scary ways. Talk about germs and how to wash your hands. There is a fun song listed under the resources you can learn and use. Explain that we just want to keep everyone as healthy as possible!

Call or video chat with family and friends.

Draw and color pictures for family and friends.

Have a dance party in your living room. Jump, dance, run in circles, be crazy, have fun.

Get Outside. From White Township Rec. Department: “feel free to utilize our outdoor parks and facilities that are open to the public while following guidelines from the CDC. This may be a good time to take advantage of a family nature walk into White’s Woods for some fresh air!” Stop by the YMCA and walk our outdoor track or use our outdoor fitness stations. Run around your yard. This would be a great time to teach your child some of the outside games you played when you were a child! Exercise is very important for our mental health as well as our physical health.

There are mental health services available across PA if you are feeling overly anxious or stressed. Use them!
Remember, this is only temporary! We will come through this together.

If this time off continues past the current two weeks, Rebecca will be in touch again to give you some additional activities to do. If you have older children and would like some additional ideas of what to do or you would like more suggestions for your little one, please contact Rebecca Chadwick
